Osage River Landscape Master Plan

Landscape Architecture ⋅ Osage, Missouri

The landscape master plan for Sinquefield Farm—a private estate and conference retreat along the Osage River in central Missouri—draws from a range of design precedents to create a cohesive and layered landscape. The 300-acre site is organized as a sequence of spaces that are experienced progressively, with circulation and plantings guiding movement throughout. A native plant palette establishes the framework for roads, trails, and pathways, while also defining a series of river overlooks. The main residence is positioned along a bluff, providing views across the river bottom and surrounding floodplain agricultural fields. Within the river bottom, an “American parterre” garden integrates agricultural crops with wetland species, combining productive and ecological functions within a unified design.

The new road is conceived as an unfolding journey through a sequence of distinct landscape conditions, including an oak entry bosque, a color-striated hedge marking a gateway to the forest, and a vine-covered boulder point-grid that emerges from the woods and extends across the road. The approach continues to the main residence, passing along the edge of a new apple orchard and framing views to the river bottom below. Surrounding the house, gardens are composed to envelop the residence in a structured sequence that emphasizes seasonal change.
